Clik here to view. The weather has’t really been conducive to a nice cooling Sauvignon Blanc, but I try not to let such details bother me. I do like cold white wines when it’s cold outside but warm and toasty inside. There’s something comforting about being snuggled up under a blanket in front of a fire and having condensation drip down the outside of a cold glass of wine.
That’s the world that this bottle was opened into. It was pasty pale, like me, almost without colour at all. It smelled fresh and fuity, with all the good sauvignon smells of crushed green fruits, gooseberries and maybe a bit of gooseberry leaf too for extra greenery.
It’s dry, but that sweet fruit makes it taste rather sweeter than it really is. The acid is medium high, and on the bright side. It packs quite a lot of flavour for a reasonably priced wine. That gooseberry taste is accompanied by something citrussy, maybe grapefruit, and a light tropcality that was almost, but not quite passionfruit. More like someone had sweetened a gooseberry crumble with just one Fruit Salad sweet.
The alcohol level is medium, as is the body.
The flavour lingers well, with the sweetness seeming to grow as the acid subsides. It’s priced nominally at £12, but with the various price wiggles that Naked Wines offer, expect to pay in the £8-9 bracket, which makes it great value.
